During a child/young person’s placement at the Caldecott Foundation their clothing and personal requisite needs will be fully met.
Children/young people will be allowed choice in the clothes that they want to buy. It is our expectation that staff will accompany and offer appropriate support to the younger children in their choice of purchase; advise and support the older children/young people and allow them to shop alone if this has been risk assessed and is part of the child/young person’s agreed plan.
Staff must be aware of cultural, racial, ethnic and religious expectations regarding the choice of clothes or personal requisites. These will have been considered and documented in the child/young person’s placement plan prior to admission.
Children/young people will be able to keep in their room/private space clothing and personal requisites and toiletries (aerosols, razors, nail polish) subject to risk assessments and consultation with external agencies and family members where appropriate.
It is the responsibility of the Registered Manager and Key-Worker to ensure young women are supported and encouraged to make personal choices with respect to sanitary protection, both in terms of variety, purchase and storage.
If a child/young person does not want to buy clothing or personal requisites then staff should try to make choices for them which are appropriate and suitable to their age, development and identity. They should evidence the work done with the young person to address the issues and to encourage person choice and decision making.
